Labplas Sani-Sponge Dry Sterile Sampling Sponges

Labplas Sani-Sponge dry kits are sterile, single-use surface sampling sponges for environmental monitoring and sanitation verification. Each kit has a dry, biocide-free sponge inside a 4.5 × 9 in TWIRL'EM sampling bag with a writing area and a twist-wire closure. Because the sponge is dry, you add the diluent or neutralizing broth your lab method specifies.

This page covers three kits: cellulose sponge, cellulose sponge with a pair of sterile gloves, and polyurethane sponge. Each is packed 400 per case. They're used in food and beverage QA/QC, food processing plants, environmental labs and research laboratories. Labplas Sani-Sponge kits are available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.

Ideal For

  • Food and beverage QA/QC: environmental monitoring of food-contact and non-food-contact surfaces
  • Food processing plants: sanitation verification and Listeria and Salmonella monitoring programs
  • Labs that prepare their own diluent or neutralizer, or need a broth not offered pre-moistened
  • Programs that want a long shelf life and room-temperature storage
  • Research laboratories, universities and colleges

Why Choose Sani-Sponge Dry Kits?

Choose your own diluent

A dry sponge lets your lab hydrate it with exactly the diluent or neutralizer your method calls for, at the volume you need. Labplas lists a functional volume of 100 mL for the bag.

5-year shelf life at room temperature

Labplas lists a 5-year lifespan for the dry kits, stored in a dry place at room temperature. You don't need fridge space, and you can keep stock on hand without short expiry dates.

Two sponge materials

Cellulose has many small pores and suits smooth surfaces such as stainless steel. Polyurethane is fully synthetic and stiffer, releases liquid more easily, and suits rougher surfaces.

Sterilized by irradiation

Labplas sterilizes Sani-Sponge kits by irradiation, with a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻³ established according to ISO 11137. The kits are also listed as DNase-free, RNase-free and non-pyrogenic (endotoxin limit 2.15 EU/device). The sponge is free from biocides, so it won't kill organisms in the sample before testing.

Bag, sponge and closure in one kit

The sponge comes inside a TWIRL'EM sampling bag with a writing area. After sampling, the sponge goes back in the bag, and you twirl the bag by its 2 round wires and fold them over to seal it. The same bag goes to the lab, and Labplas lists the bags as compatible with incubators and homogenizers (stomachers).

Food-contact compliant materials

Labplas states the bag materials meet FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation No 10/2011 for food contact. Labplas also notes the kits can be used as part of a CFIA Preventive Control Plan (PCP) and HACCP program. That is not a CFIA approval of the product itself.

Available Kits

Choose the Sponge Material and whether you want Gloves included. Polyurethane is available without gloves only. For sponges already moistened with broth, see Sani-Sponge Pre-Moistened Sampling Sponges.

Code Sponge Gloves Sponge Size Case
KSS-61100 Cellulose (yellow) No 77 × 39 mm (3 × 1.5 in) 400 (4 × 100)
KSS-61105 Cellulose (yellow) Yes, 1 sterile pair 77 × 39 mm (3 × 1.5 in) 400 (4 × 100)
KSS-61800 Polyurethane (white) No 77 × 31.8 mm (3 × 1.25 in) 400 (4 × 100)

Which Kit Should I Choose?

  • Smooth surfaces (stainless steel, plastic, glass): cellulose (KSS-61100 or KSS-61105).
  • Rough or uneven surfaces (textured belts, floors, drains): polyurethane (KSS-61800).
  • Sampling away from a glove supply, or you want sterile gloves matched to each sample: KSS-61105, which includes a pair of sterile gloves.
  • Want the broth already in the bag? See Sani-Sponge Pre-Moistened.

Common Applications

Application How These Kits Help
Environmental monitoring (food plants) Swab large surface areas with a sponge, then return it to the same bag for transport.
Sanitation verification Hydrate with a neutralizing broth so sanitizer residues don't affect results.
Pathogen monitoring programs Biocide-free sponge in a sterile bag, compatible with lab homogenizers per Labplas.
Molecular testing Labplas lists the kits as DNase-free and RNase-free.

How to Use

  1. Tear off the perforated top of the bag and open it.
  2. Put on clean or sterile gloves, then remove the sponge from the bag without touching the inside of the bag.
  3. Swab the surface following your sampling procedure, for example a defined area in two directions.
  4. Return the sponge to the bag.
  5. Twirl the bag by the wire ends to close it, fold the wires over to lock, and record the sample details in the writing area.
  6. Transport to the lab under the conditions your method requires.

Sampling areas, transport temperatures and holding times come from your lab method or customer requirements, not from the kit. Follow your own procedure.

Selection & Handling Notes

  • The sponge is dry. Hydrate it with your method's diluent or neutralizer before swabbing. A dry sponge picks up and releases organisms poorly.
  • Neutralizer choice: if the surface may carry sanitizer residue, use a neutralizing broth matched to the sanitizer. See the broth guide on the Pre-Moistened page.
  • Don't open until use. Sterility applies to the unopened kit. Discard any kit with a damaged bag.
  • Single use: use each kit once. Don't reuse them.
