Labplas Sani-Sponge Pre-Moistened Sterile Sampling Sponges

Labplas Sani-Sponge pre-moistened kits are sterile, ready-to-use surface sampling sponges for environmental monitoring and sanitation verification. Each kit has a biocide-free cellulose or polyurethane sponge already moistened with transport medium, inside a 7.5 × 11.5 in TWIRL'EM sampling bag with a writing area and a twist-wire closure. Open, swab, return the sponge to the bag and seal it, with no hydration step.

This page covers four transport media: Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), Dey-Engley Neutralizing Broth (DE), Letheen Broth (LT) and Neutralizing Buffer (NE). Each broth is available with a cellulose sponge, with or without a pair of sterile gloves, or with a polyurethane sponge (without gloves). All are packed 100 per case. They're used in food and beverage QA/QC, food processing plants, environmental labs and research laboratories. Labplas Sani-Sponge kits are available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.

Ideal For

  • Food processing plants: environmental monitoring and sanitation verification
  • Listeria and Salmonella monitoring programs where sanitizer residues may be present
  • Food and beverage QA/QC teams who want consistent, ready-to-use kits
  • Sampling crews who want sterile gloves packed with each kit
  • Research laboratories, universities and colleges

Why Choose Sani-Sponge Pre-Moistened Kits?

Ready to use, consistent every time

The sponge comes moistened with transport medium. Your team doesn't have to prepare and dispense broth, and every sample starts the same way.

Neutralizing options for sanitized surfaces

Sanitizer residue picked up by the sponge can keep killing organisms on the way to the lab, which can give false negatives. DE, LT and NE are neutralizing media, which Labplas includes to neutralize biocides from sampled surfaces. BPW is non-neutralizing.

Two sponge materials

Cellulose (yellow) has many small pores and suits smooth surfaces such as stainless steel. Polyurethane (white) is a stiffer, hydrophilic foam that releases liquid more easily, and suits rougher surfaces such as textured belts, floors and drains.

Optional sterile gloves (cellulose kits)

The "with gloves" kits include a pair of sterile blue polyethylene gloves. Labplas packs them in individual pairs, irradiates them and folds them to keep them sterile while you put them on.

Sterilized by irradiation

Labplas sterilizes Sani-Sponge kits by irradiation, with a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻³ established according to ISO 11137. The kits are also listed as DNase-free, RNase-free and non-pyrogenic (endotoxin limit 2.15 EU/device). The sponge is free from biocides, so it won't kill organisms in the sample before testing.

Bag, sponge and closure in one kit

The sponge comes inside a TWIRL'EM sampling bag with a writing area. After sampling, the sponge goes back in the bag, and you twirl the bag by its 2 round wires and fold them over to seal it. The same bag goes to the lab, and Labplas lists the bags as compatible with incubators and homogenizers (stomachers).

Food-contact compliant materials

Labplas states the bag materials meet FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation No 10/2011 for food contact. Labplas also notes the kits can be used as part of a CFIA Preventive Control Plan (PCP) and HACCP program. That is not a CFIA approval of the product itself.

Which Broth Should I Choose?

The data sheets give the following for each medium:

Broth Type pH Shelf Life Storage
BPW – Buffered Peptone Water Non-neutralizing 7.2 ± 0.2 24 months 2–8 °C
DE – Dey-Engley Neutralizing Broth Neutralizing 7.6 ± 0.2 15 months 2–8 °C
LT – Letheen Broth Neutralizing 7.0 ± 0.2 15 months 2–8 °C
NE – Neutralizing Buffer Neutralizing 7.2 ± 0.2 24 months 2–25 °C
  • BPW: a non-neutralizing buffered diluent. Choose it when your method specifies BPW, often as a pre-enrichment for Salmonella, or for surfaces without sanitizer residue.
  • Dey-Engley (DE): a broad-spectrum neutralizing broth, commonly chosen when several sanitizer types are in use (for example quaternary ammonium, chlorine, iodine or phenolic products).
  • Letheen (LT): a neutralizing broth commonly specified where quaternary ammonium sanitizers are used.
  • Neutralizing Buffer (NE): a low-nutrient neutralizing buffer, commonly specified for chlorine and quaternary ammonium sanitizers. It has the widest storage range (2–25 °C).

Labplas data sheets classify each medium as neutralizing or non-neutralizing but don't list which sanitizers each one neutralizes. The guidance above reflects common industry use. Always follow your lab method, and check neutralizer effectiveness against the sanitizers in your facility.

Specifications are from the Labplas technical data sheets for the KSS-67110, KSS-67115 and KSS-67810 codes. Some Labplas web listings show a 6 × 10.5 in bag for these kits; we've used the 7.5 × 11.5 in size from the data sheets. The volume of broth in each sponge isn't published. Contact Cambridge if you need it.

How to Use

  1. Tear off the perforated top of the bag and open it.
  2. Put on clean or sterile gloves, then remove the sponge from the bag without touching the inside of the bag.
  3. Swab the surface following your sampling procedure, for example a defined area in two directions.
  4. Return the sponge to the bag.
  5. Twirl the bag by the wire ends to close it, fold the wires over to lock, and record the sample details in the writing area.
  6. Transport to the lab under the conditions your method requires.

Sampling areas, transport temperatures and holding times come from your lab method or customer requirements, not from the kit. Follow your own procedure.

Selection & Handling Notes

  • Refrigerate on receipt. BPW, DE and LT kits are stored at 2–8 °C. NE kits can be kept at 2–25 °C.
  • Check the expiry date. DE and LT have a 15-month lifespan, so order quantities you'll use before they expire.
  • Match the broth to your sanitizer. A non-neutralizing medium (BPW) on a sanitized surface can lead to false negatives.
  • Don't open until use. Sterility applies to the unopened kit. Discard any kit with a damaged bag or leaking medium.
  • Single use: use each kit once. Don't reuse them.
