Hygiena PRO-Clean Surface Protein Residue Test Swabs

Hygiena PRO-Clean PRO-100 is a rapid surface protein residue test that helps food and beverage facilities verify cleaning effectiveness. The all-in-one swab detects residual protein on cleaned surfaces through a simple colour change, with results in 1 to 10 minutes and no laboratory instrument required.

Designed for sanitation teams and food safety professionals, PRO-Clean provides a practical way to identify surfaces that may require additional cleaning before production resumes. Each pack contains 100 ready-to-use tests.

Why Choose Hygiena PRO-Clean?

  • Fast visual results: Detects protein residue in as little as 1 minute, with greater sensitivity after 10 minutes.
  • No instrument required: No ATP luminometer, reader or additional testing equipment needed.
  • Easy-to-read results: Green indicates a pass, grey indicates caution, and purple indicates a failed cleaning check.
  • Pre-moistened swab: Designed for efficient sample collection from cleaned surfaces.
  • Simple activation: Snap-Valve technology releases the reagent into the swab tube.
  • 100 tests per pack: Suitable for routine sanitation monitoring and repeat testing.

Common Applications

PRO-Clean is particularly useful in facilities where protein residue removal is an important part of the cleaning process.

  • Food processing equipment and production lines
  • Dairy and cheese processing facilities
  • Meat, poultry and seafood processing
  • Breweries, wineries and beverage production
  • Food-contact surface cleaning verification
  • Allergen-control cleaning and product changeovers
  • HACCP and sanitation SOP monitoring programs
  • Quality assurance and pre-operational inspections

How Does PRO-Clean Work?

After cleaning, a surface is sampled using the pre-moistened swab. The swab is returned to its tube and the reagent is activated using the Snap-Valve mechanism.

The colour of the liquid provides a visual indication of residue:

  • Green - Pass: No detectable reaction within the specified test conditions.
  • Grey - Caution: A small amount of residue may remain. Follow your facility's corrective-action procedure.
  • Purple - Fail: Residue is indicated. Reclean the surface and repeat testing according to your procedure.

Hygiena recommends a standard 10 x 10 cm sampling area for typical flat surfaces. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for swabbing, activation and result interpretation.

Test Sensitivity

Read Time Protein Detection Sensitivity
1 minute 80 micrograms
5 minutes 50 micrograms
10 minutes 20 micrograms

A positive colour change may occur before 10 minutes. For a negative result, follow the full reading procedure specified by Hygiena. Disregard colour changes occurring after 10 minutes.

PRO-Clean vs ATP Testing: Which Should You Choose?

Choose PRO-Clean when your main objective is to check cleaned surfaces for protein residue and you want a straightforward visual result without investing in an instrument.

Consider ATP testing when your sanitation program requires numerical cleaning-verification results, defined test locations, historical trends or electronic reporting. ATP testing requires a compatible luminometer and test swabs.

Important Testing Considerations

PRO-Clean is a general protein residue screening test, not an allergen-specific assay. It does not identify individual allergens or replace required allergen, microbiological or pathogen testing.

Other reducing substances and certain sanitizers can interfere with results. For best performance, collect samples after detergent cleaning and rinsing, but before final disinfection where your procedure permits. Follow Hygiena's instructions and your facility's sanitation program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Hygiena PRO-Clean test for?

PRO-Clean detects general protein residue on cleaned surfaces. It is used to help verify cleaning effectiveness in food processing and sanitation programs.

How many swabs are included?

Each PRO-100 pack contains 100 single-use surface protein residue tests.

Does PRO-Clean require an ATP luminometer?

No. PRO-Clean is a visual test and does not require an instrument.

How quickly can I get a result?

Positive colour changes may appear within 1 minute. The specified detection sensitivity improves over the 10-minute test period. Follow the full manufacturer's procedure for result interpretation.

Can PRO-Clean detect specific food allergens?

No. PRO-Clean detects general protein residue. It can support allergen-control cleaning programs, but allergen-specific methods are required when verification of a particular allergen is necessary.

Can this test be used on food processing equipment?

Yes. PRO-Clean is designed for cleaned surfaces and can be used on appropriate food processing equipment, tools and food-contact surfaces according to a facility's sampling procedure.

What does a purple result mean?

A purple colour change indicates residual contamination and a failed cleaning check. Follow your sanitation procedure for recleaning and retesting.

How should PRO-Clean swabs be stored?

Store at 2 to 25 degrees C and do not use beyond the expiration date shown on the product packaging.

Not Sure Which Hygiene Test Is Right for Your Facility?

Every food production facility has different sanitation verification requirements. Whether you are checking for protein residue, measuring ATP levels, or verifying the removal of a specific allergen, choosing the right test depends on what you need to detect and how you plan to use the results.

Here is a quick guide to help you compare your options:

  • Hygiena PRO-Clean: A simple visual test for general protein residue. No instrument required. Ideal for routine cleaning checks.
  • Hygiena UltraSnap: Surface ATP testing for facilities requiring numerical hygiene results, routine monitoring, and data tracking. Requires a compatible Hygiena luminometer.
  • Hygiena AquaSnap: ATP testing for water and rinse samples. Useful for monitoring cleaning processes involving liquids. Requires a compatible Hygiena luminometer.
  • Hygiena Allergen-Specific Tests: Designed to detect particular allergens when general protein testing is not sufficient for your verification requirements.
