Cambridge Environmental Products supplies ATP testing equipment, luminometers, ATP swabs and sanitation verification products across Canada from leading manufacturers including Hygiena, Kikkoman and PCE Instruments.
Our ATP hygiene monitoring products are used by food and beverage processors, breweries, wineries, dairy facilities, sanitation teams, commercial kitchens, industrial manufacturers and QA/QC laboratories to rapidly verify cleaning effectiveness on surfaces and in compatible water or liquid samples.
Whether you are starting a new ATP testing program or comparing replacement systems, Cambridge can help you evaluate surface ATP testing, water ATP testing, luminometer features, consumable costs, data management and sanitation-monitoring requirements.
ATP testing is a rapid hygiene-monitoring method used to evaluate the effectiveness of cleaning.
ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is associated with biological material including food residue, microorganisms and other organic contamination. A compatible ATP test collects material from a surface or liquid sample and produces a bioluminescent reaction that is measured by an ATP luminometer.
Results are typically reported as RLU, or Relative Light Units. Sanitation teams can use these results with established facility limits to determine whether a test location passes, requires further evaluation or should be cleaned and retested.
ATP hygiene monitoring is primarily a cleaning-verification tool. An ATP result is not the same as a CFU count and does not identify a specific bacterium, pathogen or allergen. Microbiological, pathogen and allergen testing should still be performed when required by your sanitation program, customer specifications or applicable regulations.
Surface ATP testing provides rapid feedback after cleaning and is commonly used during pre-operational sanitation inspections.
Typical test locations include:
Cambridge offers surface ATP testing products including Hygiena UltraSnap, Kikkoman LuciPac A3 Surface and compatible PCE ATP test devices.
ATP monitoring can also be performed on compatible water and liquid samples.
Water ATP testing can be useful for:
Cambridge carries water ATP products including Hygiena AquaSnap Total and AquaSnap Free as well as Kikkoman LuciPac A3 Water.
| System | Testing Approach | Surface Testing | Water Testing | Best Fit |
| Hygiena EnSURE Touch | ATP hygiene monitoring | UltraSnap and compatible tests | AquaSnap Total / Free | Facilities wanting touchscreen workflows, test plans, reporting and sanitation trending |
| Kikkoman Lumitester Smart | A3 testing: ATP + ADP + AMP | LuciPac A3 Surface | LuciPac A3 Water | Facilities interested in Kikkoman's broader adenylate-based A3 hygiene monitoring method |
| PCE-ATP 1 | Portable ATP measurement | Compatible PCE surface tests | Compatible liquid tests | Portable ATP testing with internal result storage and computer connectivity |
Hygiena offers an integrated hygiene-monitoring platform built around the EnSURE Touch luminometer and compatible testing devices.
Hygiena products available from Cambridge include:
Hygiena is particularly useful for facilities that want to combine rapid sanitation checks with defined test locations, pass/fail limits, corrective-action workflows and historical result trending.
Kikkoman's A3 sanitation system uses the Lumitester Smart with LuciPac A3 testing devices.
Unlike ATP-only testing, the Kikkoman A3 method measures ATP, ADP and AMP. These adenylates provide a broader indicator of biological residue remaining after cleaning.
Cambridge offers Kikkoman solutions for both surface testing and water testing.
PCE Instruments offers portable ATP testing equipment for rapid sanitation and cleanliness verification.
The PCE-ATP 1 provides fast RLU measurements with internal data storage and computer connectivity, making it another option for facilities evaluating ATP hygiene-monitoring equipment.
ATP testing is widely used in food and beverage sanitation programs because it provides rapid feedback before production resumes.
Potential applications include:
ATP monitoring can complement sanitation SOPs, HACCP-based food-safety programs and internal QA/QC systems when appropriate test locations, limits and corrective actions are established.
Breweries, wineries and beverage processors can use ATP testing for both surface hygiene monitoring and compatible water or rinse samples.
Common test locations may include tanks, fillers, transfer equipment, packaging lines, production tools and selected CIP rinse points.
Combining surface and water ATP testing can give sanitation teams rapid feedback at multiple stages of the cleaning process.

ATP testing and protein residue testing are both useful sanitation-verification tools, but they measure different indicators.
ATP testing provides a numeric RLU result using a luminometer. Protein residue tests such as Hygiena PRO-Clean detect residual protein using a visual reaction and do not require an ATP luminometer.
Protein testing may be particularly useful where removal of protein-containing food residue is an important cleaning objective.
A general protein residue test can support cleaning verification but does not identify a specific allergen. Use an allergen-specific test when verification of a particular allergen is required.
The correct ATP system depends on more than the initial price of the luminometer.
When comparing systems, consider:
Tell Cambridge approximately how many ATP tests you expect to run per week and whether you need surface testing, water testing or both.
We can help compare the instrument requirements, consumables and estimated first-year testing costs for the different systems.
RLU stands for Relative Light Unit and is the measurement reported by most ATP luminometers.
RLU limits should be established for the specific ATP system, test device, location and sanitation program. A single universal RLU limit should not be assumed to apply to every facility or every manufacturer's system.
RLU values are system dependent. Limits developed for one manufacturer's luminometer and test device should not automatically be applied to another system.
ATP testing measures a bioluminescent response associated with ATP and, depending on the system, related adenylates collected from a surface or liquid sample. It is primarily used as a rapid indicator of cleaning effectiveness.
RLU means Relative Light Unit. It is the measurement commonly reported by ATP luminometers after measuring the light produced during the test reaction.
Microbial ATP can contribute to an ATP result, but ATP hygiene testing does not provide a direct bacterial count and does not identify specific organisms. Food residue and other biological material can also contribute to the result.
No. ATP testing provides rapid sanitation feedback. Microbiological or pathogen testing should still be performed whenever required by the facility's procedures, customer specifications or applicable requirements.
Many modern ATP hygiene-monitoring systems provide a result in approximately 10 to 15 seconds, depending on the luminometer and test device.
Yes. Surface ATP testing is commonly used to verify cleaning on defined food-contact and non-food-contact surfaces within a sanitation-monitoring program.
Yes, when using a compatible water ATP test. Products such as Hygiena AquaSnap and Kikkoman LuciPac A3 Water are specifically designed for compatible liquid samples.
Compatible water ATP tests can be used as part of CIP rinse-water monitoring and cleaning-verification programs when appropriate for the facility's process.
Kikkoman's A3 hygiene-monitoring method measures ATP, ADP and AMP using compatible LuciPac A3 tests and a Lumitester instrument.
Surface ATP tests collect residue directly from equipment or other surfaces. Water ATP tests are designed for compatible liquid samples such as rinse water, process water or selected CIP samples.
The appropriate system depends on your application, number of tests, surface or water requirements, consumable costs and reporting needs. Cambridge can compare Hygiena, Kikkoman and PCE options for your facility.
