Bürkle Wide-Neck HDPE Canister / Jerrycan

The Bürkle Wide-Neck HDPE Canister is a durable, reusable container designed for the storage, transport, filling and handling of compatible liquids, chemicals, food ingredients and pharmaceutical materials.

Manufactured from transparent high-density polyethylene (HDPE / PE-HD), the Bürkle 0431 series is UV stabilized for increased durability and features an exceptionally large filling opening that makes filling and internal cleaning substantially easier than with a conventional narrow-neck jerrycan.

A captive screw cap with safety strap, grip grooves in the base and a stable rectangular design make the canister practical for routine laboratory, food production, chemical, pharmaceutical and industrial QA/QC applications.

Available in 6 L, 11 L, 20 L and 30 L capacities, the standard Cambridge configuration is supplied without a lower 3/4-inch threaded outlet.

Capacity Typical Application
6 L Smaller laboratory quantities, ingredient samples, process liquids and portable QA/QC applications
11 L General-purpose laboratory, production and ingredient storage where a narrow footprint is useful
20 L Larger process liquids, food ingredients, production samples and bulk laboratory materials
30 L Higher-volume storage, production liquids, bulk ingredients and industrial applications

Large Wide-Neck Opening

The defining feature of the Bürkle 0431 canister is its very large filling opening.

Bürkle describes the canister as having an approximately 88 mm wide filling opening, while the dimensional specification lists a 105 mm external thread and approximately 95 mm internal neck diameter.

The wide-mouth design makes the canister substantially easier to:

  • Fill from larger vessels
  • Add liquid ingredients
  • Inspect internally
  • Rinse between uses
  • Clean the internal surfaces
  • Empty materials that would be inconvenient through a narrow-neck jerrycan

This can be especially useful when containers are reused and thorough internal cleaning is an important part of the workflow.

Designed for Easier Internal Cleaning

Bürkle specifically highlights internal cleaning as one of the principal advantages of the wide-neck design.

The large opening gives operators better access to the inside of the canister than a conventional small-neck chemical or water jerrycan.

This makes the 0431 series particularly useful for sensitive products, ingredients or samples where residues from a previous fill must be thoroughly removed.

The appropriate cleaning procedure still depends on the product being stored and your laboratory, food-safety or quality-system requirements.

UV-Stabilized HDPE Construction

The canister is manufactured from transparent high-density polyethylene (HDPE / PE-HD) and is UV stabilized.

UV stabilization improves the durability of the polymer when exposed to ultraviolet radiation compared with non-stabilized material.

This can be useful for applications where the container may periodically be used outdoors, transported between buildings or exposed to sunlight.

UV Stabilized Does Not Mean Light-Protective

UV stabilization is intended to improve the durability of the canister material. Because the container is transparent, it should not be treated as a light-protective bottle for products that must be shielded from UV or visible light.

Captive Screw Cap with Safety Strap

The wide screw closure is attached to the canister using a safety strap, helping prevent the cap from being misplaced during filling, cleaning or dispensing.

Bürkle describes the screw cap as secure, convenient and sealable.

This can be particularly useful in production and laboratory environments where containers are opened and closed repeatedly throughout the working day.

Grip Grooves for Safer Handling

Molded grip grooves in the base give the operator an additional handhold when lifting, carrying, tipping or emptying the canister.

This is particularly useful on the larger 20 L and 30 L versions, where handling a partially or fully filled container can otherwise be awkward.

Consider Filled Weight

A 20 or 30 litre canister can become very heavy depending on the density of the material being stored. Always use an appropriate fill volume and manual-handling procedure for the application.

18 mm Venting & Pouring Spout on 6 L and 11 L Models

The 6 L and 11 L versions include a separate approximately 18 mm auxiliary opening.

This small opening can serve two useful functions:

  • Controlled pouring: Dispense smaller quantities without using the large main opening
  • Venting during filling: Allow displaced air to escape while liquid enters through the main opening

The 20 L and 30 L standard versions do not include this additional small opening.

Food & Beverage Applications

Bürkle publishes food-contact documentation for the 0431 wide-neck canister family and identifies food ingredients and food production among its typical applications.

Potential applications include:

  • Liquid ingredients
  • Process liquids
  • Food-production samples
  • QA/QC retain samples
  • Ingredient staging
  • R&D and formulation work
  • Temporary storage of compatible food materials

Facilities should still confirm suitability for their specific product, sanitation procedure, allergen-control program and food-safety requirements.

Chemical & Industrial Applications

Bürkle also identifies the wide-neck HDPE canister for storing and transporting compatible chemicals.

Potential applications include:

  • Process chemicals
  • Cleaning solutions
  • Production samples
  • Water-based formulations
  • Industrial QA/QC samples
  • Intermediate process liquids
  • Research and development materials

Check Chemical Compatibility

HDPE is compatible with many chemicals, but compatibility is not universal. Confirm suitability for the exact chemical, concentration, temperature, contact time and storage conditions before use.

Pharmaceutical & Laboratory Applications

Bürkle specifically identifies pharmaceutical products and laboratory use among the applications for the 0431 series.

The large opening can be useful where containers must be filled, emptied and cleaned frequently.

Potential uses include:

  • Process-water handling
  • Bulk laboratory solutions
  • Intermediate materials
  • Raw-material samples
  • Research samples
  • Production QA/QC liquids

Regulated users should confirm that the material, cleaning procedure, documentation and intended use meet the requirements of their quality system.

Environmental & Water Applications

The large capacities and wide opening can also be useful in environmental and water-treatment work.

Potential applications include:

  • Bulk water samples
  • Composite sample preparation
  • Process-water storage
  • Wastewater laboratory work
  • Field sampling support
  • Rinse-water handling

For regulated analytical samples, confirm that HDPE is appropriate for the analytes, preservation method and sampling procedure.

Optional Self-Adhesive Litre Graduation

The standard Bürkle wide-neck canister does not have an integrated moulded volume scale.

Bürkle offers a separate self-adhesive blue litre graduation that can be applied to the outside of compatible canister sizes.

The scale is useful for quickly estimating the amount of liquid remaining in the container.

Graduation Is for Approximate Volume Indication

The optional adhesive litre scale is intended for quick volume estimation. It should not be treated as calibrated volumetric laboratory glassware where an analytical or certified volume measurement is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bürkle wide-neck canister made from?

The Bürkle 0431 series is manufactured from transparent, UV-stabilized high-density polyethylene (HDPE / PE-HD).

What sizes are available?

Cambridge offers the standard wide-neck canister in 6 L, 11 L, 20 L and 30 L capacities.

How large is the opening?

Bürkle describes the product as having an approximately 88 mm wide filling opening. Its dimensional specification lists a 105 mm external thread and approximately 95 mm internal neck diameter.

Why use a wide-neck canister?

A wide opening makes filling, emptying, internal inspection and cleaning easier than with a conventional narrow-neck jerrycan. This is especially useful when the container is reused or holds materials that can leave residues.

Do all sizes have the small pouring spout?

No. The 6 L and 11 L models have an additional approximately 18 mm venting and pouring opening. The standard 20 L and 30 L models do not.

What is the small 18 mm opening used for?

It can be used to vent the canister while filling through the main opening or to dispense smaller amounts of liquid more controllably.

Does the canister have volume graduations?

An integrated graduated scale is not standard. Bürkle offers a separate self-adhesive blue litre scale for approximate volume indication.

Is the Bürkle wide-neck canister suitable for food applications?

Bürkle publishes food-contact documentation for the 0431 family and identifies food ingredients and food production as typical applications. Users should still confirm suitability for their specific product and sanitation program.

Can it store chemicals?

Bürkle identifies compatible chemicals as an intended application. Chemical resistance depends on the exact substance, concentration, temperature and exposure time, so compatibility should be checked before use.

Is the canister UV resistant?

Bürkle specifies the HDPE as UV stabilized. This improves material durability but does not make the transparent canister suitable for products that require complete protection from light.

Is the screw cap attached to the canister?

Yes. The wide screw cap is retained by a safety strap so it remains attached while the canister is open.

Can I attach a dispensing tap?

The standard 0431-0xxx versions on this page do not have a lower threaded outlet. Bürkle also manufactures separate 0431-1xxx versions with a G 3/4-inch male outlet designed for compatible taps and accessories.

Can it be used as a settling container?

Bürkle offers the related 3/4-inch threaded version for settling applications because clarified liquid can be withdrawn from the lower outlet without disturbing sediment as much as pouring from the top.

Is this dangerous-goods shipping packaging?

Do not assume so. Bürkle does not list a UN dangerous-goods approval for the standard 0431 wide-neck canister on its current product specification. Regulated dangerous goods require an appropriately approved means of containment.

What is the difference between a canister and a jerrycan?

The terms are often used interchangeably for this style of rigid liquid container. Bürkle describes the 0431 family using both wide-neck canister and wide-neck jerrycan terminology.
