Proper filter bed expansion during backwash is essential for maintaining filter performance and extending equipment life. The EPA recommends 20-25% expansion to effectively clean filter media like anthracite and sand. Insufficient expansion allows "mud balls" to form, compromising the filter's ability to remove harmful microorganisms including Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts. How to Use:

1) Lower the sensor to rest on the  compacted media bed prior to backwash.

2) Press Zero on the controller to set the counter to 0.

3) As dirt and debris is evacuated, the red light will illuminate.

4) When the backflow water becomes clear, the media will begin to rise with expansion.

5) Raise the sensor just until the red light goes out. Repeat until the bed finishes expanding. Note the amount of expansion on the display.
