Hygiena SpotCheck Plus Rapid Glucose & Lactose Surface Test – 100 Tests
Hygiena SpotCheck Plus is a rapid swab test that detects glucose and lactose residue on surfaces as a quick indicator of surface hygiene. These sugars are common in food residue, so finding them after cleaning means the surface wasn't cleaned properly. Swab the surface, snap to release the reagent, and read the colour after 60 seconds. If it stays clear, the surface passes. If it turns green, it's not clean.
SpotCheck Plus needs no instrument and no incubator, so anyone on the sanitation team can use it at the line. It's sold in boxes of 100 single-use tests. Hygiena SpotCheck Plus is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.
Ideal For
- Dairy processing: lactose is a direct marker of milk residue
- Food and beverage processing: sugar-containing products such as juices, bakery, confectionery and sauces
- Pre-operational sanitation checks at the line, with no lab equipment
- Sites that want a low-cost, instrument-free cleaning check alongside ATP or protein testing
Why Choose SpotCheck Plus?
Results in 60 seconds
Read the result after 1 minute and re-clean straight away if the surface fails. Staff don't have to wait for lab results before starting production.
No instrument or incubator
The colour change is read by eye against the chart on the tube label. There's no luminometer, reader or incubator to buy, calibrate or maintain.
Sensitive to sugar residue
Hygiena states SpotCheck Plus detects down to 2.5 µM D-glucose and 5.0 µM lactose within 1 minute. The more sugar present, the faster and darker the colour change.
All-in-one device
The swab and reagent are in one self-contained device, with no pipetting or mixing. Hygiena describes the devices as 100% recyclable.
How to Use
- Let the device warm to room temperature (20–25 °C) before use.
- Twist and pull the swab out of the tube. Swab a 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) area in a crisscross pattern, pressing firmly enough to flex the shaft and rotating the swab.
- Return the swab to the tube.
- Break the SnapValve by bending the bulb back and forth, then squeeze the bulb twice to release all the liquid.
- Shake for 5 seconds to soak the swab tip.
- Wait 1 minute, then compare the colour to the chart on the tube label. If there's no colour change after 2 minutes, the test is negative.
Reading the Result
| Colour | Result | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | Pass | Surface is clean. No action needed. |
| Light green | Caution | Small amount of residue. Re-clean, rinse or re-test according to your protocol. |
| Dark green | Fail | Not clean. Re-clean and re-test. |
Steps and interpretation are from the Hygiena SpotCheck Plus instructions for use. Hygiena recommends running positive and negative controls as part of good laboratory practice.
Common Applications
| Application | How SpotCheck Plus Helps |
|---|---|
| Dairy equipment | Lactose detection shows milk residue left after cleaning. |
| Sugar-containing product lines | Glucose detection shows residue from juices, syrups, bakery and confectionery. |
| Pre-operational inspection | A quick pass/fail check before start-up, read at the line. |
| Training and spot checks | A simple visual result that helps sanitation staff see where cleaning was missed. |

Selection & Handling Notes
- Detects glucose and lactose only. A clear result means those sugars weren't detected. It doesn't rule out other residues such as fats or proteins. For broader cleaning verification, use it alongside ATP or protein residue testing.
- Refrigerate on receipt. Store at 2–8 °C, don't freeze, and keep at room temperature (9–22 °C) for no more than 4 weeks. Hygiena notes the product is temperature sensitive.
- Warm before use. Let devices reach 20–25 °C before testing.
- Single use only. See the Safety Data Sheet for handling information.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does SpotCheck Plus detect?
Glucose and lactose residue on surfaces. These sugars are common in food residue, so detecting them shows a surface hasn't been cleaned properly.
How long does it take?
1 minute. If there's no colour change after 2 minutes, the test is negative.
Do I need an instrument or incubator?
No. The result is read by eye against the chart on the tube label, at room temperature.
How do I read the result?
Clear means pass, light green means caution, and dark green means fail.
Is it good for dairy plants?
Yes. Lactose is the main sugar in milk, so the test is a direct check for milk residue on dairy equipment.
How should I store it?
Refrigerate at 2–8 °C and don't freeze. Devices can be kept at 9–22 °C for up to 4 weeks. Let them reach room temperature before use.
Is SpotCheck Plus available in Canada?
Yes. Cambridge Environmental Products supplies Hygiena SpotCheck Plus across Canada with CAD pricing.
