Hygiena MicroSnap™ EB – Rapid Enterobacteriaceae Test, Step 1 & Step 2
Hygiena MicroSnap EB is a rapid test that detects and counts Enterobacteriaceae (EB) in food, liquids and on surfaces. EB are a widely used hygiene indicator group in food production. The test gives a CFU count in 6 or 7 hours, or a presence/absence result after 8 hours, so you have results within the same shift. It uses a Step 1 enrichment device and a Step 2 detection device, read on the Hygiena EnSURE Touch.
Step 1 and Step 2 devices are each sold in boxes of 100. Hygiena MicroSnap EB is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.
Ideal For
- Food processing: Enterobacteriaceae as a hygiene and process indicator
- Environmental monitoring: EB on food-contact and non-food-contact surfaces
- Dairy, infant formula, meat and ready-to-eat producers monitoring EB
- Same-day decisions on product release or re-cleaning
Why Choose MicroSnap EB?
Same-shift results
Counts are ready after 6 or 7 hours of enrichment, or presence/absence after 8 hours, plus a 10-second read. Product can be held or released, or a surface re-cleaned, the same day instead of waiting 1 to 3 days for plate counts.
Counts read automatically
The Hygiena EnSURE Touch reads the detection device and converts the light signal to CFU, so there are no colonies to count by hand. Results are stored and can be trended in SureTrend.
One system for surfaces, liquids and solids
Swab a 10 × 10 cm surface directly with the enrichment device, or add 1 mL of a liquid or 10% food homogenate. Serial dilutions extend the counting range for heavily contaminated samples.
Count or presence/absence
Run 6 or 7 hours for a count, or 8 hours or more for a presence/absence result. The EnSURE Touch reports 0 as absence, 1 as caution and 2 or more as presence.
How MicroSnap Works: Two Steps
Each test uses one Step 1 device and one Step 2 device. Both are sold separately in boxes of 100, so for 100 tests, order one box of each.
- Step 1 – Enrichment: a pre-moistened swab device with growth medium. Collect the sample, activate and incubate at 37 °C for 6 or 7 hours (count) or 8–24 hours (presence/absence).
- Step 2 – Detection: transfer 0.1 mL (2 drops) of the enriched sample into the detection device, activate and read on the EnSURE Touch.
Available Devices
Choose the Device in the selector.
| Code | Device | Step | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS1-EB | MicroSnap EB Enrichment Device | Step 1 – Enrichment | 100 |
| MS2-EB | MicroSnap EB Detection Device | Step 2 – Detection | 100 |
How to Use
- Let devices reach room temperature (20–25 °C) before use.
- Sample: swab a 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) area in a crisscross pattern, or add 1 mL of liquid or 10% w/v food homogenate to the enrichment device.
- Enrich: break the Snap-Valve, squeeze to release the medium, shake gently and incubate at 37 °C for 6 or 7 hours (count) or 8–24 hours (presence/absence).
- Detect: transfer 0.1 mL (2 drops) of enriched sample to the detection device, break the Snap-Valve and squeeze to release the reagent, mix gently and read straight away.
- Read: insert the detection device into the EnSURE Touch. Results display in CFU in about 10 seconds.
Steps are summarized from the Hygiena MicroSnap EB instructions for use. Follow the full instructions for timing, dilutions and controls.
Counting Range
| Sample | Approximate Range |
|---|---|
| Surface | From 10 CFU/swab |
| Liquid (1 mL) | From 10 CFU/mL |
| Solid (10% w/v suspension) | From 100 CFU/g |
| Presence/absence (8 h) | 0 = absence, 1 = caution, ≥2 = presence |
Upper limits depend on enrichment time (6 or 7 hours). See the Hygiena instructions for the full ranges, and dilute samples that exceed them.

Selection & Handling Notes
- Order both steps. Step 1 and Step 2 devices are sold separately and both are needed for each test.
- Refrigerate on receipt. Store devices at 2–8 °C, out of prolonged light, and use by the expiry date.
- Warm samples and devices first. Cold samples under-detect. Bring samples and devices to 20–25 °C before testing.
- Keep timing tight. Incubation time and temperature affect counts, so use a calibrated dry block incubator.
- Not a Salmonella test. Hygiena notes EB counts can't substitute for Salmonella testing.
- Some matrices need broth vials. Thick, dark or opaque samples can give low counts, and leafy greens can give high counts. Hygiena recommends its Enhanced EB Broth for difficult samples.
- Dispose safely. Used devices may be biohazardous. Autoclave, or soak unsealed devices in 20% bleach for 1 hour, before disposal.
- For food and environmental testing only. Not for diagnostic use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does MicroSnap EB detect?
Enterobacteriaceae, a family of bacteria used as a hygiene and process indicator in food production.
How long does it take?
6 or 7 hours for a count, or 8 hours or more for presence/absence, plus about 10 seconds to read.
