Hygiena AllerSnap® High-Sensitivity Protein Residue Test – 100 Tests

Hygiena AllerSnap is a rapid swab test that detects protein residue left on surfaces after cleaning. Many food allergens are proteins, so it's widely used in allergen cross-contact prevention programs to check that equipment has been cleaned properly between product runs. Swab the surface, snap to release the reagent and incubate at 37 °C. The liquid stays green if the surface is clean and turns purple if protein is present, with results in 30 minutes or less.

AllerSnap detects as little as 3 µg of protein (per Hygiena), with no instrument needed to read the result. It needs only a 37 °C incubator. It's sold in boxes of 100 single-use tests. Hygiena AllerSnap is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.

Ideal For

  • Allergen changeovers: verifying cleaning between allergen-containing and allergen-free production runs
  • Food and beverage processing: routine protein residue checks on food-contact surfaces
  • Allergen control and preventive control plans that need documented cleaning verification
  • Sites that want a visual result without a luminometer or reader

Why Choose AllerSnap?

High sensitivity for protein residue

Hygiena states AllerSnap detects as little as 3 µg of protein after 30 minutes at 37 °C. That helps catch low-level residue that visual inspection misses.

Easy-to-read colour result

The reagent starts green and turns grey or purple as protein is detected. A faster, deeper colour change means more residue. No instrument is needed to read the result, so staff can interpret it on the spot.

Broad protein detection

AllerSnap detects total protein rather than one specific allergen. One test can check for residue from many different products, and it works faster than allergen-specific test kits.

All-in-one, recyclable device

The swab and reagent are in one self-contained device, with no pipetting or mixing. Hygiena describes the devices as 100% recyclable.

How to Use

  1. Let the device warm to room temperature (21–25 °C) before use.
  2. Pull the swab out of the tube and swab a 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) area in a crisscross pattern, rotating the swab.
  3. Return the swab to the tube.
  4. Break the Snap-Valve and squeeze the bulb twice. The liquid should turn green. If it isn't green, the test is invalid.
  5. Shake for 5 to 10 seconds to soak the swab tip.
  6. Incubate at 37 °C for 30 minutes. You can stop early if the liquid turns purple.
  7. Compare the colour to the chart on the tube label and record the result.

Reading the Result

Colour Result Action
Green (including green-grey) Pass Surface is clean. No further action.
Grey Caution Small amount of residue. Re-clean, rinse or re-test according to your protocol.
Purple Fail Not clean. Re-clean and re-test.

Steps and interpretation are from the Hygiena AllerSnap instructions for use.

Common Applications

Application How AllerSnap Helps
Allergen changeover verification Confirms protein residue has been removed before the next product run.
Pre-operational inspection Checks food-contact surfaces after cleaning and rinsing.
Validating cleaning procedures Shows whether a cleaning method removes protein residue consistently.
Spot checks Visual result with no reader or luminometer needed.

Selection & Handling Notes

  • Total protein, not a specific allergen. AllerSnap shows that protein residue is present or absent. It doesn't identify which allergen. Where your program requires confirmation of a specific allergen, use an allergen-specific test as well.
  • Incubator required. Results are based on 30 minutes at 37 °C. Testing at lower temperatures may not reach the stated sensitivity.
  • Test before disinfection. Hygiena advises testing after detergent cleaning and rinsing, but before terminal disinfection, or after the proper dwell time.
  • Sanitizer interference: peroxide-based disinfectants can cause false positives, and high concentrations of alkaline sanitizers may cause false negatives.
  • Don't swab visibly dirty surfaces. Heavy soil inhibits the reaction. Clean first, then verify.
  • Single use only. See the Safety Data Sheet for handling and disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AllerSnap detect?

It detects total protein residue on surfaces. Many food allergens are proteins, so it's used to verify cleaning in allergen control programs. It doesn't identify a specific allergen.

How sensitive is it?

Hygiena states AllerSnap detects as little as 3 µg of protein after 30 minutes at 37 °C.

Do I need an incubator?

Yes. The test is incubated at 37 °C for 30 minutes. A dry block incubator set to 37 °C works.

How do I read the result?

Green means pass, grey means caution, and purple means fail. Compare the colour to the chart on the tube label.

Can sanitizers affect the result?

Yes. Peroxide-based disinfectants can cause false positives, and strong alkaline sanitizers may cause false negatives. Test after cleaning and rinsing, before terminal disinfection.

How should I store it?

Between 2 °C and 25 °C. For maximum shelf life, refrigerate at 2–8 °C. Let devices reach room temperature before use.

Is AllerSnap available in Canada?

Yes. Cambridge Environmental Products supplies Hygiena AllerSnap across Canada with CAD pricing.
