VACUUBRAND MZ 2C NT Oil-Free Chemistry Vacuum Pump

The VACUUBRAND MZ 2C NT is a two-stage, oil-free chemistry diaphragm vacuum pump designed for laboratory applications involving compatible chemical gases and vapours. It provides an ultimate vacuum of 7 mbar absolute (5 Torr) and a maximum pumping speed of 1.4 cfm at 60 Hz.

With chemically resistant wetted components, PTFE sandwich diaphragms and an integrated gas ballast valve, the MZ 2C NT is suitable for many research, chemistry and laboratory evaporation applications. Manufacturer part number 20732303 is the North American electrical configuration, rated for 120 V/60 Hz operation with NRTL C/US certification.

Key Features

  • Oil-free operation: No vacuum pump oil changes or oil mist from the pumping mechanism.
  • Two-stage design: Reaches 7 mbar absolute, suitable for applications requiring deeper vacuum than a single-stage chemistry diaphragm pump.
  • Chemically resistant construction: Fluoroplastic wetted components and PTFE sandwich diaphragms.
  • Integrated gas ballast: Helps manage condensable vapours during operation.
  • Continuous operation: Designed for ongoing pumping of compatible laboratory gases and vapours.
  • Compact design: Measures 243 × 243 × 198 mm and weighs approximately 11.1 kg.

Ideal Applications

University chemistry laboratories, pharmaceutical and chemical research, suitable rotary evaporation, vacuum concentration, solvent evaporation, gel drying and other laboratory processes requiring chemically resistant, oil-free vacuum.

Important Application Note: Chemical resistance does not mean compatibility with every chemical or vapour. Confirm the materials being pumped, operating pressure, gas load and exhaust requirements before purchasing. The 7 mbar specification is the ultimate vacuum, not a guarantee of operating pressure under continuous load. This pump is not intended to draw liquid directly through the pumping mechanism.

What Does the Gas Ballast Do?

The MZ 2C NT includes a gas ballast valve to help the pump handle condensable vapours. This is useful in applications where vapours may otherwise condense during compression inside the pump.

Opening the gas ballast improves vapour handling but raises the ultimate vacuum from 7 mbar to approximately 12 mbar absolute.

For applications with heavy vapour loads or possible liquid carryover, additional inlet or exhaust protection may still be required.

What Is Included and Which Accessories Are Available?

Included: Fully assembled MZ 2C NT vacuum pump and manufacturer operating manual.

Depending on your application, you may also require:

  • 20686061: DN 8 mm vacuum tubing.
  • 20636588: Silencer with short DN 8–10 mm hose.
  • 20696869: Replacement diaphragm and valve kit for maintenance.
  • Vacuum regulation: Suitable valve, gauge or control equipment when the process requires a controlled vacuum level.
  • Condensate management: Appropriate inlet protection or vapour recovery equipment for the substances being pumped.

Vacuum tubing, regulation and vapour-management accessories should be selected for the full laboratory system. Do not assume these accessories are included with the standard pump.

MZ 2C NT vs. ME 2C NT: Which Pump Should I Choose?

Both models are oil-free chemistry diaphragm pumps designed for compatible laboratory gases and vapours.

  • ME 2C NT: Single-stage chemistry pump with an ultimate vacuum of approximately 70 mbar absolute. Suitable when a less demanding vacuum level is sufficient.
  • MZ 2C NT: Two-stage chemistry pump with a 7 mbar ultimate vacuum and integrated gas ballast. Better suited to applications requiring deeper vacuum or improved handling of condensable vapours.

Both models have similar maximum free-air pumping speeds at 60 Hz. Select according to the operating pressure, actual gas load and chemical compatibility rather than the maximum flow rating alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the VACUUBRAND MZ 2C NT oil-free?

Yes. The diaphragm pump operates without vacuum pump oil, eliminating routine oil changes.

Can the MZ 2C NT be used for rotary evaporation?

It can be suitable for rotary evaporation where its vacuum level, pumping speed and chemical compatibility meet the process requirements. Some applications also benefit from vacuum regulation and solvent recovery accessories.

Is this pump resistant to solvents and chemical vapours?

It is designed for compatible chemical gases and vapours using chemically resistant wetted materials. Suitability must still be checked for the actual chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and operating conditions.

What vacuum can the pump achieve?

The published ultimate vacuum is 7 mbar absolute (5 Torr), or 12 mbar with gas ballast. Actual pressure during operation depends on the application and gas load.

Does the MZ 2C NT provide adjustable vacuum control?

The standard pump does not include an integrated electronic vacuum controller. Suitable manual or electronic control accessories can be selected separately. Cambridge also offers VACUUBRAND pump systems with additional control components.

Does this model have Canadian electrical certification?

Manufacturer part number 20732303 is the North American 120 V configuration with NRTL C/US certification. Confirm the supplied unit and any institution-specific electrical requirements before ordering.

Can the pump operate continuously?

VACUUBRAND describes the MZ 2C NT as designed for continuous pumping of compatible gases and vapours. Operating pressure, vapour load, exhaust arrangements and other process requirements must still be considered.

What maintenance does the pump require?

The pump does not require oil changes. Diaphragms and valves are wear components and may require replacement over time. VACUUBRAND offers a compatible service kit, part number 20696869.
