Applications & Industry Fit
Food & Beverage QA/QC
The MB62 can be used to develop rapid moisture or percent-solids procedures for suitable ingredients, powders, grains, bakery products, intermediate materials, and finished-product samples.
The ability to store separate methods is particularly useful when a facility tests several products that require different sample weights, temperatures, or drying profiles.
Agriculture, Grain, Feed & Horticulture
Suitable agricultural materials such as grains, feed ingredients, seeds, powders, and soil-related samples can be evaluated where a thermogravimetric loss-on-drying method is appropriate and validated for the intended purpose.
Wastewater & Environmental Laboratories
The MB62 can be useful for moisture or percent-solids measurements on suitable sludge, residue, or process samples when a laboratory-developed or validated procedure allows thermogravimetric analysis.
Important Wastewater Method Note
The MB62 should not automatically be described as a direct Total Suspended Solids (TSS) analyzer. Standard TSS procedures typically require filtration of a measured water sample followed by drying and weighing the retained residue. Follow the required regulatory or laboratory method when compliance testing is involved.
Chemicals, Plastics & Industrial Materials
The MB62 can support moisture or loss-on-drying checks for suitable powders, resins, ingredients, formulations, and raw materials where thermogravimetric testing is appropriate.
If a sample contains solvents or other volatile components in addition to water, remember that a moisture analyzer measures mass loss during heating. The result may therefore include volatile material other than water.
Research & Product Development
The 40°C to 200°C temperature range together with Standard, Fast, Ramp, and Step drying programs gives researchers flexibility to develop procedures for samples with different drying behaviours.
Production Quality Control
Stored methods, sample IDs, result memory, and visual status indication make the MB62 practical for recurring production-floor or near-line quality-control checks where a validated rapid moisture result is needed.
How Does the OHAUS MB62 Measure Moisture?
The MB62 uses thermogravimetric analysis. The instrument first records the initial sample weight and then heats the sample while continuously monitoring its mass.
As moisture and other volatile material leave the sample, the measured weight decreases. The MB62 calculates the result from the difference between the starting and final mass.
Results can be displayed as moisture content, dry content / percent solids, moisture regain, weight, time, and temperature.
A Moisture Analyzer Measures Mass Loss, Not Water Specifically
If the sample contains volatile compounds other than water, those compounds may also be driven off during heating and contribute to the measured mass loss. Method development should consider the chemistry of the sample as well as the required reporting method.
Four Drying Profiles
Standard
Standard mode heats the sample to the selected target temperature and maintains that temperature until the selected shutoff condition is reached.
Fast
Fast drying applies a stronger initial heating stage before returning toward the programmed target temperature. It can reduce test time for suitable samples that tolerate a more aggressive heating profile.
Ramp
Ramp mode gradually increases temperature over a defined period. This can be useful for temperature-sensitive samples or materials that may form a crust, caramelize, or decompose if heated too aggressively.
Step
Step mode allows two or three temperature stages to be programmed with separate endpoint conditions. It is useful when a sample benefits from different drying conditions during different stages of the test.
Sample Size & Preparation
The MB62 has a maximum weighing capacity of 90 g and requires a minimum starting weight of approximately 0.5 g.
There is no single ideal sample weight for every material. OHAUS publishes repeatability values using both 3 g and 10 g samples, but the best sample size depends on the product, expected moisture level, drying behaviour, desired analysis time, and required repeatability.
Samples should normally be representative and distributed in a thin, even layer across the 90 mm sample pan. Excessively thick or uneven samples can take longer to dry and may produce different drying behaviour between the surface and centre.
Glass-fibre pads can help with suitable liquids, pastes, fat-containing products, melting samples, skin-forming materials, and other samples that benefit from increased surface area.
Sample Size Affects Repeatability
OHAUS lists MB62 repeatability at 0.10% with a 3 g sample and 0.018% with a 10 g sample under stated test conditions. A larger sample may improve repeatability in some applications, but it can also increase drying time. Method development should balance sample size, layer thickness, analysis time, and the precision required.
