Description

Malt Extract Agar
Malt Extract Agar is a solid medium used for the cultivation and maintenance of fungi, particularly yeast and molds. The medium is based on the formula recommended by Thom and Church. Pancreatic Digest of Gelatin provide nitrogenous sources for the growth of yeasts and molds, while Maltose, Dextrin and Glycerol are the main carbohydrates. Agar is the gelifying agent. Its low pH prevents the growth of bacteria, while allowing that of fungi. There is a choice of 3 sizes - 500g, 2kg, and 10kg.
PREPARATION: Mix 33.6 grams of the medium in one liter of purified water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring and boil to dissolve completely. Distribute and autoclave at 118 to 121°C for 15 minutes. DO NOT OVERHEAT.
