Kikkoman Lumitester Smart A3 Hygiene Monitoring System
The Kikkoman Lumitester Smart is a portable hygiene-monitoring luminometer designed to give food processors, sanitation teams and QA/QC departments rapid, objective feedback on cleaning effectiveness.
Used with Kikkoman LuciPac A3 test devices, the system measures ATP + ADP + AMP and reports a numerical result in RLU (Relative Light Units) in approximately 10 seconds.
This makes it easy to check a surface or compatible water sample immediately after cleaning, identify areas that may require corrective action, and retest before production continues.
The Lumitester Smart is especially well suited to food and beverage plants, breweries, wineries, dairy facilities, commercial kitchens, sanitation programs and industrial QA/QC applications.

What Makes Kikkoman A3 Testing Different?
Traditional ATP hygiene monitoring uses ATP (adenosine triphosphate) as an indicator of biological and organic residue.
Kikkoman's A3 method expands this approach by measuring three adenylates:
- ATP – adenosine triphosphate
- ADP – adenosine diphosphate
- AMP – adenosine monophosphate
During food processing, storage and cleaning, ATP can break down into ADP and AMP. Kikkoman's LuciPac A3 chemistry is designed to measure the combined ATP + ADP + AMP signal, providing a broader indicator of residual biological soil than ATP-only measurement.
For sanitation teams, the goal is straightforward: provide a fast numerical indication of whether a defined test location has been cleaned effectively enough according to the facility's hygiene-monitoring program.
A3 Testing Is a Cleaning-Verification Tool
The Lumitester Smart does not provide a CFU count and does not identify a specific bacterium, pathogen or allergen. Use appropriate microbiological, pathogen or allergen-specific methods whenever those tests are required.
How Does the Lumitester Smart Work?
Routine hygiene testing can be completed in three basic steps:
- Swab: Collect the sample from the defined surface using LuciPac A3 Surface, or collect a compatible liquid sample using LuciPac A3 Water.
- Activate: Follow the LuciPac instructions to release and mix the reagent, then place the test device into the Lumitester Smart.
- Measure: Start the test and receive the RLU result in approximately 10 seconds.
The result can then be compared with the limits established for that specific test location. If the result does not meet the facility's sanitation criteria, corrective cleaning and retesting can be performed immediately.
Surface Hygiene Testing
For equipment and production surfaces, pair the Lumitester Smart with Kikkoman LuciPac A3 Surface.
Surface A3 testing can be used to verify cleaning on locations such as:
- Conveyors
- Mixers and blenders
- Fillers
- Tanks
- Production tables
- Packaging equipment
- Cutting equipment
- Utensils and tools
- Food-contact surfaces
- Non-food-contact surfaces
LuciPac A3 Surface is sold separately and is available in 100-test kits.
Water & Liquid Hygiene Testing
For compatible water and liquid samples, use Kikkoman LuciPac A3 Water.
Potential applications include:
- CIP rinse-water monitoring
- Final rinse verification
- Process water
- Brewery and beverage applications
- Water-treatment systems
- Industrial water hygiene monitoring
LuciPac A3 Water is also supplied in 100-test kits and is purchased separately from the luminometer.
Food & Beverage Sanitation Verification
One of the strongest applications for the Kikkoman Lumitester Smart is pre-operational sanitation verification in food and beverage facilities.
Because results are available in approximately 10 seconds, QA and sanitation personnel can test critical locations after cleaning and respond immediately rather than waiting for a traditional microbiological result.
Potential uses include:
- Pre-operational sanitation checks
- Food-contact surface verification
- Changeover cleaning verification
- Packaging-line sanitation
- Ingredient-handling equipment
- Corrective-action retesting
- Sanitation training
- Cleaning-performance trending
Breweries, Wineries & Beverage Plants
The combination of surface and water A3 testing makes the Lumitester Smart particularly useful in breweries, wineries and beverage-processing facilities.
Potential test locations include:
- Fermentation and storage tanks
- Transfer lines
- Fillers
- Canning and bottling equipment
- Packaging lines
- Production tools
- CIP rinse samples
This allows sanitation teams to monitor different stages of the cleaning process using one Lumitester platform with the appropriate LuciPac A3 consumable.
Understanding RLU Results
The Lumitester Smart reports results in RLU, or Relative Light Units.
In a cleaning-verification program, lower results generally indicate that less ATP + ADP + AMP was detected at the test location after cleaning.
Each facility should establish appropriate limits for its specific test locations, sanitation procedures and Kikkoman A3 system.
Avoid Universal RLU Limits
RLU values are system dependent. Do not automatically apply pass/fail limits developed for another ATP luminometer or reagent system to the Kikkoman Lumitester Smart. Establish appropriate limits using your own sanitation program, test locations and Kikkoman guidance.
Lumitester App & Data Management
The Lumitester Smart can connect to Kikkoman's Lumitester App to help organize and analyze hygiene-monitoring results.
The system can be used to:
- Create and manage defined test points
- Set benchmark values for individual locations
- Link test results to specific locations
- Display historical results over time
- Visualize inspection performance using graphs
- Compare sanitation trends
- Manage data from multiple sites through cloud-supported workflows
The Lumitester Smart supports USB and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity. Kikkoman specifically lists Canada among the regions where its Bluetooth functionality is supported.
Why Use Digital Hygiene Monitoring?
Recording ATP/A3 results over time can provide more information than a single pass/fail measurement.
Trending data can help QA and sanitation teams identify:
- Locations that are repeatedly difficult to clean
- Changes in sanitation performance
- Recurring corrective actions
- Opportunities for employee training
- Changes following new cleaning procedures
The Lumitester App helps convert individual test results into an ongoing sanitation-monitoring program rather than leaving results on handwritten inspection sheets.
