Hygiena MicroSnap™ Total – Rapid Total Viable Count Test, Step 1 & Step 2
Hygiena MicroSnap Total is a rapid test for total viable count (TVC), also called aerobic plate count, in food, liquids and on surfaces. It gives a CFU count in about 7 hours, so you have results within the same shift instead of waiting 2 to 3 days for plates. The test uses a Step 1 enrichment device and a Step 2 bioluminescent detection device, read on the Hygiena EnSURE Touch.
Hygiena states the MicroSnap Total system with the EnSURE Touch holds AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Methods℠ certification. Step 1 and Step 2 devices are each sold in boxes of 100. Hygiena MicroSnap Total is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.
Ideal For
- Food and beverage QA/QC: total viable counts on raw materials and finished product
- Environmental monitoring: bacterial load on surfaces after cleaning
- Dairy, meat, poultry and bakery producers who want same-day counts
- Shelf-life and process checks where waiting for plate counts slows decisions
Why Choose MicroSnap Total?
Same-shift results
Results are ready in about 7 hours of enrichment plus a 10-second read. Product can be held or released, or a surface re-cleaned, the same day instead of waiting 1 to 3 days for plate counts.
Counts read automatically
The Hygiena EnSURE Touch reads the detection device and converts the light signal to CFU, so there are no colonies to count by hand. Results are stored and can be trended in SureTrend.
One system for surfaces, liquids and solids
Swab a 10 × 10 cm surface directly with the enrichment device, or add 1 mL of a liquid or 10% food homogenate. Serial dilutions extend the counting range for heavily contaminated samples.
AOAC validated
Hygiena states MicroSnap Total with the EnSURE Touch holds AOAC RI Performance Tested Methods℠ certification (#031501) for aerobic heterotrophic bacteria. Validated matrices include ground beef, raw chicken, raw milk, cream cake and packaged lettuce.
How MicroSnap Works: Two Steps
Each test uses one Step 1 device and one Step 2 device. Both are sold separately in boxes of 100, so for 100 tests, order one box of each.
- Step 1 – Enrichment: a pre-moistened swab device with growth medium. Collect the sample, activate and incubate at 30 °C for 7 hours.
- Step 2 – Detection: transfer 0.1 mL (2 drops) of the enriched sample into the detection device, activate and read on the EnSURE Touch.
Available Devices
Choose the Device in the selector.
| Code | Device | Step | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS1-TOTAL | MicroSnap Total Enrichment Device | Step 1 – Enrichment | 100 |
| MS2-TOTAL | MicroSnap Total Detection Device | Step 2 – Detection | 100 |
How to Use
- Let devices reach room temperature (20–25 °C) before use.
- Sample: swab a 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) area in a crisscross pattern, or add 1 mL of liquid or 10% w/v food homogenate to the enrichment device.
- Enrich: break the Snap-Valve, squeeze to release the medium, shake gently and incubate at 30 °C for 7 hours.
- Detect: transfer 0.1 mL (2 drops) of enriched sample to the detection device, break the Snap-Valve and squeeze to release the reagent, and shake gently for 2 seconds.
- Read: insert the detection device into the EnSURE Touch. Results display in CFU in about 10 seconds.
Steps are summarized from the Hygiena MicroSnap Total instructions for use. Follow the full instructions for timing, dilutions and controls.
Counting Range
| Sample | Approximate Range |
|---|---|
| Surface | 10 to 1,000,000 CFU/swab |
| Liquid (1 mL) | 10 to 500,000 CFU/mL |
| Solid (10% w/v suspension) | 100 to 50,000 CFU/g |
After 7 hours, per Hygiena. The limit of detection is roughly 10–100 CFU/mL. 1% and 0.1% dilutions extend the range to about 500,000 and 5,000,000 CFU.

Selection & Handling Notes
- Order both steps. Step 1 and Step 2 devices are sold separately and both are needed for each test.
- Refrigerate on receipt. Store devices at 2–8 °C, out of prolonged light, and use by the expiry date.
- Warm samples and devices first. Cold samples under-detect. Bring samples and devices to 20–25 °C before testing.
- Keep timing tight. Incubation time and temperature affect counts, so use a calibrated dry block incubator.
- Some matrices need broth vials. Opaque samples such as undiluted milk can give low counts, and leafy greens can give high counts. Hygiena recommends its Enhanced Nutrient Broth for difficult samples, which is outside the AOAC certification.
- Dispose safely. Used devices may be biohazardous. Autoclave, or soak unsealed devices in 20% bleach for 1 hour, before disposal.
- For food and environmental testing only. Not for diagnostic use.
