Hygiena MicroSnap™ Coliform & E. coli – Rapid Test, Step 1 & Step 2
Hygiena MicroSnap Coliform and MicroSnap E. coli are rapid tests that detect and count coliforms and E. coli in food, liquids and on surfaces. Both use the same Step 1 enrichment device, then a coliform or E. coli Step 2 detection device, read on the Hygiena EnSURE Touch. Counts are ready in about 6 hours, or presence/absence after 8 hours, so you have results within the same shift.
Hygiena states the MicroSnap Coliform and E. coli methods hold AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Methods℠ certification. Each device is sold in boxes of 100. Hygiena MicroSnap Coliform and E. coli tests are available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.
Ideal For
- Food and beverage QA/QC: coliform and E. coli counts on raw materials and finished product
- Water and beverage producers checking for faecal indicators
- Dairy, meat and produce processors who want same-day results
- Environmental monitoring of surfaces for coliforms
Why Choose MicroSnap Coliform & E. coli?
Same-shift results
Counts are ready after about 6 hours of enrichment, or presence/absence after 8 hours, plus a 10-minute detection step and a 10-second read. Product can be held or released, or a surface re-cleaned, the same day instead of waiting 1 to 3 days for plate counts.
Counts read automatically
The Hygiena EnSURE Touch reads the detection device and converts the light signal to CFU, so there are no colonies to count by hand. Results are stored and can be trended in SureTrend.
One system for surfaces, liquids and solids
Swab a 10 × 10 cm surface directly with the enrichment device, or add 1 mL of a liquid or 10% food homogenate. Serial dilutions extend the counting range for heavily contaminated samples.
One enrichment, two tests
The same Step 1 device (MS1-CEC) enriches for both coliforms and E. coli. From one enriched sample you can run the coliform test, the E. coli test, or both.
AOAC validated
Hygiena states the methods hold AOAC RI Performance Tested Methods℠ certification (#071302) within the validated incubation times.
How MicroSnap Works: Two Steps
Each test uses one Step 1 device and one Step 2 device. Both are sold separately in boxes of 100, so for 100 tests, order one box of each.
- Step 1 – Enrichment: a pre-moistened swab device with growth medium. Collect the sample, activate and incubate at 37 °C for 6 hours (count) or 8–24 hours (presence/absence).
- Step 2 – Detection: transfer 0.1 mL (2 drops) of the enriched sample into the detection device, activate, incubate at 37 °C for 10 minutes, and read on the EnSURE Touch.
Available Devices
Choose the Device in the selector.
| Code | Device | Step | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS1-CEC | MicroSnap Coliform & E. coli Enrichment Device | Step 1 – Enrichment | 100 |
| MS2-COLIFORM | MicroSnap Coliform Detection Device | Step 2 – Coliform Detection | 100 |
| MS2-ECOLI | MicroSnap E. coli Detection Device | Step 2 – E. coli Detection | 100 |
Which Devices Should I Order?
- Coliform testing: MS1-CEC (Step 1) + MS2-COLIFORM (Step 2).
- E. coli testing: MS1-CEC (Step 1) + MS2-ECOLI (Step 2).
- Both from one sample: one MS1-CEC + one MS2-COLIFORM + one MS2-ECOLI.
How to Use
- Let devices reach room temperature (20–25 °C) before use.
- Sample: swab a 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) area in a crisscross pattern, or add 1 mL of liquid or 10% w/v food homogenate to the enrichment device.
- Enrich: break the Snap-Valve, squeeze to release the medium, shake gently and incubate at 37 °C for 6 hours (count) or 8–24 hours (presence/absence).
- Detect: transfer 0.1 mL (2 drops) of enriched sample to the detection device, break the Snap-Valve and squeeze to release the reagent, then incubate at 37 °C for 10 minutes.
- Read: insert the detection device into the EnSURE Touch. Results display in CFU in about 10 seconds.
Steps are summarized from the Hygiena MicroSnap Coliform & E. coli instructions for use. Follow the full instructions for timing, dilutions and controls.
Counting Range
| Sample | Approximate Range |
|---|---|
| Surface | 10 to 10,000 CFU/swab |
| Liquid (1 mL) | 10 to 10,000 CFU/mL |
| Solid (10% w/v suspension) | 100 to 10,000 CFU/g |
| Presence/absence (8 h) | 0 = absence, 1 = caution, ≥2 = presence |
After 6 hours, per Hygiena. 1% and 0.1% dilutions extend the range to about 100,000 and 1,000,000 CFU.

Selection & Handling Notes
- Order both steps. Step 1 and Step 2 devices are sold separately and both are needed for each test.
- Refrigerate on receipt. Store devices at 2–8 °C, out of prolonged light, and use by the expiry date.
- Warm samples and devices first. Cold samples under-detect. Bring samples and devices to 20–25 °C before testing.
- Keep timing tight. Incubation time and temperature affect counts, so use a calibrated dry block incubator.
- Known limitations: Hygiena notes Hafnia alvei isn't detected, Shigella sonnei can't be distinguished from E. coli, and E. coli O157:H7 is detected by the coliform test but not the E. coli test. Hygiena recommends confirming E. coli results where needed.
- Some matrices need broth vials. Undiluted milk or chocolate can give low counts, and leafy greens or fermented dairy can give high counts.
- Dispose safely. Used devices may be biohazardous. Autoclave, or soak unsealed devices in 20% bleach for 1 hour, before disposal.
- For food and environmental testing only. Not for diagnostic use.
