Hygiena MediCheck™ High-Sensitivity Protein Residue Test for Healthcare – 100 Tests
Hygiena MediCheck is a rapid swab test that detects protein residue left on surfaces after cleaning. Hygiena designed it for healthcare settings such as sterile processing departments and dental practices, to check that surgical and dental instruments and washer-disinfector surfaces have been cleaned properly before disinfection or sterilization. Swab the surface, snap to release the reagent and incubate at 37 °C. The liquid stays green if the surface is clean and turns purple if protein is present, with results in 5 to 30 minutes.
MediCheck detects as little as 3 µg of protein (per Hygiena), with no instrument needed to read the result. It needs only a 37 °C incubator. It's sold in boxes of 100 single-use tests. Hygiena MediCheck is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.
Ideal For
- Sterile processing departments: verifying instrument cleaning before sterilization
- Dental practices: checking that instruments are clean after washing
- Washer-disinfector checks: verifying surfaces and cleaning performance
- Infection prevention programs that need documented cleaning verification
Why Choose MediCheck?
Confirms cleaning before sterilization
Protein residue such as blood and tissue left on instruments can shield microorganisms and stop disinfection and sterilization from working properly. MediCheck shows whether cleaning removed that residue, so problems can be fixed before the instrument moves on.
High sensitivity
Hygiena states MediCheck detects about 3 µg of protein after 30 minutes at 37 °C. Heavier soil shows sooner: about 10 µg from 5 minutes and 5 µg from 10 minutes.
Easy-to-read colour result
Green means pass, grey means caution and purple means fail. Staff read the result by eye against the chart on the tube label, with no reader or luminometer.
All-in-one, recyclable device
The pre-moistened swab and reagent are in one device, with no pipetting or mixing. Hygiena describes the plastic as recyclable.
How to Use
- Let the device warm to room temperature (21–25 °C).
- Pull out the swab and swab the surface in a crisscross pattern, rotating the swab. Use a 10 × 10 cm area on flat surfaces. Don't touch the swab tip.
- Return the swab to the tube. Break the Snap-Valve and squeeze the bulb twice to release all the liquid.
- Shake for 5 to 10 seconds to wet the swab tip.
- Incubate at 37 °C for 30 minutes. Read early if the liquid turns purple.
- Compare the colour to the chart on the tube label and record the result.
Reading the Result
| Colour | Result | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Green (including green-grey) | Pass | Clean. No further action. |
| Grey | Caution | Small amount of residue. Re-rinse, re-clean or re-test according to your protocol. |
| Purple | Fail | Not clean. Re-clean and re-test. |
Steps and interpretation are from the Hygiena MediCheck instructions for use. A negative control (a device activated without sampling) can be incubated alongside for colour comparison.

Selection & Handling Notes
- A cleaning check, not a sterility test. MediCheck verifies protein removal after cleaning. It doesn't replace sterilization monitoring, your facility's reprocessing procedures or the instrument manufacturer's reprocessing instructions.
- Test before disinfection. Hygiena advises testing after detergent cleaning and rinsing, but before terminal disinfection, or after the proper dwell time.
- Interferences: peroxide-based disinfectants can cause false positives, and high concentrations of alkaline detergents or sanitizers may cause false negatives. Sugars, tannins and ascorbic acid also react.
- Incubator required. Results are based on 37 °C. Testing at lower temperatures may not reach the stated sensitivity.
- Don't swab visibly soiled items. Heavy soil overloads the swab. Clean first, then verify.
- Swab reach: the swab samples surfaces it can reach. Confirm suitability for narrow lumens or complex devices with your reprocessing team.
- Single use only. See the Safety Data Sheet for handling information.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is MediCheck used for?
Checking that surgical and dental instruments, and washer-disinfector surfaces, are free of protein residue after cleaning.
How sensitive is it?
Hygiena states it detects about 3 µg of protein after 30 minutes at 37 °C.
How long does it take?
5 to 30 minutes at 37 °C. Heavily soiled samples turn purple sooner.
Do I need an incubator?
Yes. The test is incubated at 37 °C. A dry block incubator set to 37 °C works.
Does it replace sterilization indicators?
No. It verifies cleaning. Continue to use your normal sterilization monitoring and reprocessing procedures.
How should I store it?
Between 2 °C and 25 °C. Let devices reach room temperature before use.
Is MediCheck available in Canada?
Yes. Cambridge Environmental Products supplies Hygiena MediCheck across Canada with CAD pricing.
