Hygiena InSite® Salmonella – Environmental Salmonella Swab Test, 50 Tests

Hygiena InSite Salmonella is an all-in-one swab test for screening food processing environments for Salmonella. Swab the surface, pre-enrich in the device, then snap to release the selective medium and incubate at 37 °C. If Salmonella is present, the medium changes from purple to bright yellow. Presumptive positives are visible from 24 hours and negatives are confirmed at 48 hours, with no media prep or transfers.

Hygiena states InSite Salmonella holds AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Methods℠ certification for stainless steel, plastic, rubber, ceramic and sealed concrete. It's sold in boxes of 50 tests. Hygiena InSite Salmonella is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.

Ideal For

  • Food processing plants: Salmonella environmental monitoring after cleaning
  • Low-moisture foods: spices, nuts, flour, pet food, confectionery and dry ingredients
  • Poultry, meat and egg facilities with Salmonella control programs
  • In-house screening before sending presumptive positives for confirmation

Why Choose InSite Salmonella?

All-in-one device

The pre-moistened foam swab, selective medium and pH indicator are in one sealed device. Pre-enrichment and selective enrichment both happen in the same tube, with no transfers.

Easy visual result

The medium changes from purple to bright yellow when Salmonella is present. Staff read it by eye against the colour chart on the label.

Validated on common plant surfaces

Hygiena states InSite Salmonella holds AOAC RI Performance Tested Methods℠ certification (#022302) on stainless steel, plastic, rubber, ceramic and sealed concrete.

How to Use

  1. Swab the surface in a crisscross pattern: 30 × 30 cm or 10 × 10 cm for stainless steel, 10 × 10 cm for other surfaces.
  2. Return the swab to the tube without activating the device.
  3. Pre-enrich at 37 ± 1 °C for 6 hours.
  4. Break the SnapValve, squeeze the bulb to release the medium, massage the tube bottom and shake for 3 seconds.
  5. Incubate at 37 ± 1 °C for a further 18–42 hours, then read the colour of the medium.

Steps are summarized from the Hygiena InSite Salmonella instructions for use. Follow the full instructions.

Reading the Result

Result What You See Meaning
Negative Medium stays purple Salmonella not detected (final at 48 hours total)
Presumptive positive Medium turns bright yellow Presumptive Salmonella; confirm

Read the medium, not the swab. A negative can only be recorded after 48 hours in total. Confirm presumptives by streaking onto selective Salmonella agar or with another recognized confirmation method.

Selection & Handling Notes

  • Don't skip or extend pre-enrichment. Skipping the 6-hour pre-enrichment increases false negatives, and extending it increases false positives.
  • Results are presumptive. Some Citrobacter, E. coli and Raoultella strains, and acidic residues such as sanitizers, can turn the medium yellow. Confirm positives.
  • Wait 48 hours for negatives.
  • Refrigerate on receipt. Store at 2–8 °C and use by the expiry date.
  • Trained staff only. These tests can grow pathogens. Hygiena advises that pregnant women and immunocompromised people should not be near testing.
  • Dispose safely. Treat used devices as biohazards. Autoclave, incinerate, or soak unsealed devices in 20% bleach for 1 hour before disposal.
