Hygiena InSite® Listeria – Environmental Listeria spp. Swab Test, 50 Tests
Hygiena InSite Listeria is an all-in-one swab test for screening food processing environments for Listeria species. Swab the surface, snap to release the selective broth, and incubate at 37 °C. If Listeria is present, the yellow medium turns grey or black, with presumptive positives visible from 24 hours and negatives confirmed at 48 hours. There's no media prep, no plating and no lab equipment beyond a 37 °C incubator.
Hygiena states InSite Listeria detects fewer than 10 CFU of Listeria spp. and holds AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Methods℠ certification. It's sold in boxes of 50 tests. Hygiena InSite Listeria is available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.
Ideal For
- Food processing plants: routine Listeria environmental monitoring after cleaning
- Ready-to-eat, dairy, meat and produce facilities with Listeria control programs
- In-house screening before sending presumptive positives for confirmation
- Sites that want low-cost, visual results without a full micro lab
Why Choose InSite Listeria?
All-in-one device
The pre-moistened foam swab, selective broth and colour indicator are in one sealed device, so there's no media to prepare or transfer and less risk of cross-contamination.
Easy visual result
Listeria enzymes turn the yellow broth grey or black. Staff read the result by eye, with no reader or luminometer.
Sensitive screening
Hygiena states the test detects fewer than 10 CFU of Listeria spp., and heat-injured L. monocytogenes at 10–50 CFU even with high levels of competing organisms. The large foam tip helps collect more of the sample.
AOAC validated
Hygiena states InSite Listeria holds AOAC RI Performance Tested Methods℠ certification (#121902) for Listeria spp. on plastic, ceramic and stainless steel surfaces.
How to Use
- Swab a 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) area in a crisscross pattern, rotating the swab.
- Return the swab to the tube and seal it.
- Break the SnapValve and squeeze the bulb 3–4 times to release the broth.
- Massage the bottom of the tube and shake for 3 seconds.
- Incubate at 37 ± 1 °C for 24–48 hours, then read the colour.
Steps are summarized from the Hygiena InSite Listeria instructions for use. Follow the full instructions.
Reading the Result
| Result | What You See | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Negative | No colour change (yellow) | Listeria spp. not detected (final at 48 hours) |
| Presumptive positive | Grey or black on the swab or in the broth | Presumptive Listeria spp.; confirm |
A negative can only be recorded after 48 hours. Presumptive positives can be confirmed with PCR or a reference method such as Health Canada, FDA BAM, USDA MLG or ISO.

Selection & Handling Notes
- Results are presumptive. Confirm positives with PCR or a reference method.
- Wait 48 hours for negatives. Don't record a negative before 48 hours of incubation.
- Listeria-like organisms such as Enterococcus can also cause blackening. Expect more presumptives from heavily contaminated sites such as floors and drains.
- Refrigerate on receipt. Store at 2–8 °C and use by the expiry date.
- Trained staff only. These tests can grow pathogens. Hygiena advises that pregnant women and immunocompromised people should not be near testing.
- Dispose safely. Treat used devices as biohazards. Autoclave, incinerate, or soak unsealed devices in 20% bleach for 1 hour before disposal.
