A&D EK-1200i Compact Balance – 1200 g x 0.1 g

The A&D EK-1200i Compact Balance combines a 1200 g weighing capacity with 0.1 g readability in a compact benchtop design for laboratory, production, food and beverage QA/QC, education, parts counting and general industrial weighing.

Part of A&D's long-running EK-i Series, the EK-1200i features a SUS304 stainless steel weighing pan, backlit LCD, standard RS-232C communication, external calibration, counting with ACAI, percentage weighing and HI/OK/LO comparator functions.

Its rectangular 170 × 133 mm weighing pan provides useful working area for beakers, sample containers, trays, bags and small components while the complete balance occupies only approximately 190 × 218 mm of bench space.

1200 g Capacity with 0.1 g Readability

The EK-1200i measures from zero to 1200 g with 0.1 g increments, providing 12,000 displayed divisions.

This capacity/readability combination works well for applications that need greater precision than a typical 1 g bench scale without requiring the 0.01 g or 0.001 g resolution of a higher-cost laboratory precision balance.

Typical weighing applications include:

  • Laboratory samples
  • Food ingredients
  • QA/QC samples
  • Packaging checks
  • Parts and components
  • Formulation ingredients
  • Educational laboratory work
  • Production and inventory checks

0.1 g Readability Is Not 0.1 mg

The EK-1200i has a readability and repeatability of 0.1 g. It is not a milligram balance. Applications requiring 0.01 g, 0.001 g or finer readability should use a higher-resolution A&D balance.

SUS304 Stainless Steel Weighing Pan

A&D equips the EK-1200i with a 170 × 133 mm SUS304 stainless steel weighing pan.

The rectangular pan provides enough surface area for many common laboratory and production containers, including:

  • Beakers
  • Sample cups
  • Small trays
  • Ingredient containers
  • Parts bins
  • Plastic bags
  • Small packages

Stainless steel provides a durable, easy-to-clean weighing surface for routine laboratory and industrial use.

Compact Benchtop Design

The EK-1200i measures approximately 190 mm wide × 218 mm deep × 53 mm high, allowing it to fit on crowded laboratory benches, production workstations and classroom tables.

Approximate net weight is 1.5 kg, making the balance relatively easy to relocate when required.

Adjustable feet and an integrated spirit level help the operator establish a level weighing surface before calibration and use.

Fast, Backlit LCD Display

The EK-1200i uses a 7-segment backlit LCD with 16 mm-high characters for easy reading.

A&D specifies a display update rate of approximately 10 times per second, while the balance provides an approximately 2-second stabilization time under appropriate weighing conditions.

The backlight can be configured for automatic operation, continuously on or off depending on the application.

Parts Counting with ACAI

The EK-1200i includes a dedicated parts-counting mode with A&D's ACAI technology.

ACAI – Automatic Counting Accuracy Improvement continually improves the calculated unit weight as additional pieces are placed on the pan.

This can improve counting accuracy compared with relying only on the original small reference sample.

EK-1200i counting specifications include:

  • Maximum displayed count: 12,000 pieces
  • Minimum unit weight: 0.1 g under the standard setting
  • Selectable initial samples: 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 pieces

Counting mode can be useful for hardware, fasteners, small components, packaging parts, inventory checks and production quantities.

Percentage Weighing

Percentage mode displays a sample's weight relative to a stored reference weight defined as 100%.

For the EK-1200i:

  • Minimum 100% reference weight: 10 g
  • Minimum percentage display: 0.1%

Percentage weighing can be useful for formulation checks, sample comparisons, ingredient ratios and production consistency.

HI / OK / LO Comparator Function

The built-in comparator function allows upper and lower limits to be established so the EK-1200i can identify whether a weighing result is:

  • HI – above the specified range
  • OK – within the specified range
  • LO – below the specified range

This is useful for repetitive checkweighing applications such as verifying package contents, sample quantities, components or production weights.

An optional comparator relay output and buzzer is also available where external signalling is required.

Standard RS-232C Data Communication

Unlike many basic compact balances, the A&D EK-1200i includes a standard RS-232C serial interface.

The interface can communicate with compatible:

  • Computers
  • Printers
  • Data loggers
  • Remote displays
  • Laboratory data systems

RS-232C can also receive supported commands, allowing external control of selected balance functions.

GLP / GMP / GCP / ISO Documentation Output

The EK-i platform supports structured documentation output through the serial interface.

Depending on the connected equipment and configuration, output can include information such as:

  • Manufacturer
  • Balance model
  • Serial number
  • User-defined ID number
  • Calibration information
  • Calibration-test information
  • Signature field

This can help laboratories maintain more organized weighing and calibration records.

GLP Output Is Not the Same as Regulatory Compliance

The EK-1200i provides functions designed to support GLP/GMP/GCP/ISO-style documentation. The balance itself does not make a laboratory or weighing procedure compliant with a particular regulatory or quality standard.

External Calibration

The EK-1200i uses external weight calibration.

A&D lists 1200 g as the factory calibration-weight setting, although the balance provides settings for performing calibration with an appropriate external mass.

For QA/QC applications, use calibration or verification weights appropriate to the accuracy requirements of your weighing program.

Calibration frequency should be determined by the balance's use, environment, quality system and risk associated with an incorrect weighing result.

Optional Rechargeable Battery for Portable Use

The standard EK-1200i operates from its AC adapter. A&D also offers an optional Ni-MH rechargeable battery pack for cordless weighing.

A&D's current EK-i instruction manual specifies approximately 9 hours of continuous battery operation with the LCD backlight switched off.

Battery Is Optional

The rechargeable battery pack is not part of the standard EK-1200i configuration unless specifically included in the quotation or product package. Do not confuse the EK-i battery specification with the much longer battery life published for A&D's separate EK-AEP intrinsically safe series.

Adjustable Response for Drafts & Vibration

A&D allows the balance's response characteristics to be adjusted to help accommodate different weighing environments.

A faster response may be useful on a stable bench, while a slower response setting can improve stability when vibration or air movement affects the displayed value.

For best performance, place the EK-1200i on a firm, level surface away from strong drafts, vibration, direct sunlight and rapid temperature changes.

Food & Beverage QA/QC Applications

The 1200 g capacity, 0.1 g readability and stainless weighing pan make the EK-1200i useful for many non-trade food and beverage laboratory applications.

Potential uses include:

  • Ingredient weighing
  • R&D formulations
  • Sample preparation
  • Package-weight checks
  • Portion consistency checks
  • QA/QC verification
  • Percentage formulation work

Where weight is used to determine the price charged in Canada, confirm that a Measurement Canada-approved device is being used instead.

Laboratory & Research Applications

The EK-1200i provides a practical balance for laboratories that need 0.1 g resolution over a relatively large 1.2 kg capacity.

Typical uses can include:

  • General sample preparation
  • Buffer and solution preparation
  • Ingredient weighing
  • Teaching laboratories
  • Research samples
  • Routine mass checks
  • Percentage weighing
  • Parts counting

Production & Industrial QA/QC

The comparator and counting functions make the EK-1200i particularly useful outside the traditional laboratory.

Potential production applications include:

  • Small parts counting
  • Component verification
  • Packaging checks
  • Incoming-material inspection
  • Assembly-kit verification
  • Inventory counting
  • Production QA/QC

Education & Teaching Laboratories

The compact footprint, straightforward controls and multiple application modes also make the EK-1200i useful for educational laboratories.

Students can perform general weighing, percentage calculations, parts counting and data-output exercises on the same instrument.
