A-1 Medium

A-1 Medium is used for the detection of fecal coliforms in drinking water, treated wastewater, seawater, and beverages. Enzymatic Digest of Casein provides nitrogenous sources and vitamins. Lactose and Salicin are the carbohydrate sources providing energy for bacterial growth. Sodium Chloride maintains the osmotic balance. Triton X-100 is a surfactant improving nutrient uptake by the bacteria. There is a choice of 3 sizes - 500g, 2kg, and 10kg.

PREPARATION: Mix 31.5 grams of the medium in one liter of purified water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring to dissolve completely. Distribute into test tubes with Durham tubes and autoclave at 121°C for 10 minutes.
