A&D MX-50 Halogen Moisture Analyzer

The A&D MX-50 Moisture Analyzer measures moisture content using the loss-on-drying method. It weighs a sample, heats it with a halogen lamp and calculates moisture content from the change in mass.

With a 51 g capacity, 0.001 g weighing readability and 0.01% moisture display resolution, the MX-50 is suited to Canadian food processors, ingredient manufacturers, research laboratories and industrial QA/QC teams that need consistent moisture testing.

The MX-50 offers adjustable drying programs, a 50–200°C temperature range, memory for test methods and results, and RS-232C data output for laboratory recordkeeping.

Key Features

  • 51 g capacity and 0.001 g readability: Suitable for small laboratory samples.
  • 0.01% moisture display resolution: Allows detailed moisture-content readings.
  • 50–200°C halogen heating: Adjustable in 1°C increments for suitable materials.
  • Flexible testing: Standard, Quick, Automatic, Timer and Manual measurement modes.
  • Programmable methods: Store 20 measurement programs for different sample types.
  • Data recording: Store up to 100 results and transfer data through RS-232C.

Ideal Applications

Food and beverage quality control, powders and ingredients, bakery products, pet food, agricultural samples, chemical manufacturing, plastics, university research and industrial moisture testing.

Important: The MX-50 measures mass lost during heating. If your sample releases solvents or other volatile compounds, the result may not represent water alone. Do not heat flammable, explosive or hazardous samples that could release dangerous vapours. Confirm sample suitability and validate the drying method before routine testing.

Moisture display resolution and weighing readability are not the same as measurement accuracy. Actual performance depends on sample preparation, test conditions and method suitability.

Measurement Modes and Drying Programs

The MX-50 allows laboratories to control both how a sample is heated and when the measurement finishes.

Measurement modes:

  • Standard: General-purpose testing with automatic completion settings.
  • Quick: Uses a rapid initial heating pattern to shorten suitable tests.
  • Automatic: Finishes when the rate of moisture loss reaches the selected limit.
  • Timer: Runs for a specified duration.
  • Manual: Allows the operator to stop the measurement.

Heating patterns: Standard, Quick, Ramp and Step provide different temperature profiles for suitable samples.

The MX-50 stores up to 20 measurement programs, helping laboratories use consistent settings for products tested regularly.

Method selection matters: A drying temperature that works well for one ingredient may be unsuitable for another. Establish the appropriate settings using your laboratory's reference method and sample requirements.

The manufacturer's instructions also describe an automatic reduction of the maximum drying temperature to 160°C after one hour of operation.

What Is Included with the MX-50?

The standard equipment package described by Cambridge includes:

  • MX-50 moisture analyzer
  • 20 sample pans and two pan handles
  • Tweezers and sample spoon
  • 30 g sodium tartrate dihydrate test sample
  • Glass fibre sample sheets
  • WinCT-Moisture software on CD-ROM
  • RS-232C connection cable
  • Display cover and dust cover
  • Power cord, spare fuses and documentation

The supplied software format and accessories should be confirmed against the current factory package when ordering.

Calibration and Moisture Performance Checks

The MX-50 has three different types of performance checks to consider:

  • Weighing calibration: Uses a suitable external calibration weight, such as A&D AD-1700-20G.
  • Drying temperature calibration: Uses the optional A&D AX-43 Temperature Calibrator to check and adjust the analyzer's heating temperature.
  • Moisture performance checking: Uses a reference material such as A&D AX-33 Sodium Tartrate Dihydrate to evaluate moisture measurement performance.

These are different procedures. A moisture reference sample does not replace temperature or weighing calibration.

For laboratories with formal quality systems, confirm which procedures, calibration frequencies and documentation are required by your internal quality program.

Software, Data Export and Recordkeeping

The MX-50 includes an RS-232C interface and supports A&D WinCT-Moisture software for data transfer and analysis.

The instrument can store up to 100 test results and output measurement information for laboratory records. It also supports date, time, identification and calibration-related reporting functions.

Because the instrument uses a conventional serial connection and the original software was supplied on CD-ROM, laboratories using newer Windows computers may require an appropriate USB-to-serial adapter and compatible software.

Contact Cambridge to confirm the current WinCT-Moisture software requirements before purchasing if direct computer integration is essential.

Compatible Accessories and Consumables

For routine operation and instrument maintenance, Cambridge offers the following A&D products:

Other manufacturer accessories include replacement sample pans, pan handles, halogen lamps, calibration weights and communication adapters. Contact Cambridge if you need help confirming the correct part numbers.

MX-50 vs. MS-70: Which Moisture Analyzer Should You Choose?

Choose the MX-50 when your laboratory needs 51 g capacity, 0.001 g weighing readability and 0.01% moisture display resolution.

Consider the A&D MS-70 when your testing requires finer weighing readability (0.0001 g), a finer moisture display setting or higher sample capacity.

Both instruments use halogen loss-on-drying technology. Selection should be based on the sample type, testing method, required repeatability and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the A&D MX-50 measure?

The MX-50 measures mass loss during controlled heating and calculates moisture content using the loss-on-drying method. Results depend on the sample and selected drying procedure.

What is the capacity and readability?

The MX-50 has a maximum capacity of 51 g and weighing readability of 0.001 g. Its selectable moisture display resolution is 0.01% or 0.1%.

Can the MX-50 test food ingredients and powders?

Yes, for suitable samples. Food processors and ingredient laboratories can use the MX-50 to develop and perform moisture testing procedures for powders, grains, bakery ingredients and other materials. Drying conditions should be validated for each product.

How long does a moisture test take?

Test time depends on the sample, selected temperature and measurement program. The MX-50 offers Quick, Automatic, Timer and other modes, but there is no single test time that applies to every material.

Does the MX-50 need calibration?

Regular performance checks are recommended. Weighing calibration uses a suitable mass, temperature calibration uses the optional AX-43, and sodium tartrate dihydrate can be used to check moisture measurement performance.

Can moisture results be downloaded to a computer?

Yes. The MX-50 supports RS-232C data communication and A&D WinCT-Moisture software. Confirm computer, adapter and software compatibility before purchasing for an integrated laboratory system.

Does the MX-50 measure water activity?

No. Moisture content and water activity are different measurements. The MX-50 measures mass lost during drying. A water activity meter measures the availability of water within a sample.

Is the MX-50 suitable for university or research laboratories?

Yes. The MX-50 can support laboratory teaching, formulation development and research where halogen loss-on-drying is suitable for the material being tested.
