Labplas TWIRL'EM® Clear Sampling Bags

Labplas TWIRL'EM Clear bags are clean, single-use, fully transparent sampling bags for collecting, transporting and storing liquid, semi-solid and solid samples. The clear film lets you see the sample without opening the bag, and the built-in wire closure seals it waterproof and airtight with a simple twirl and fold.

This page covers seven Clear sizes with the standard 2-round-wire closure, from 3.5 × 7 in to 7 × 12 in, including a heavier 4 mil 7 × 12 in bag. They're used in food and beverage QA/QC, wastewater and environmental labs, agriculture, research laboratories, and universities and colleges. TWIRL'EM bags are available in Canada from Cambridge Environmental Products with CAD pricing and Canadian purchasing support.

Ideal For

  • Food and beverage QA/QC: microbiology samples where you want to see the contents
  • Wastewater and environmental labs: water, sludge and soil samples
  • Agriculture: feed, crop and soil samples
  • Research laboratories, universities and colleges: general sample collection
  • Labs that apply their own barcode or LIMS labels and don't need a printed writing area

Why Choose TWIRL'EM Clear Bags?

Clean, single-use bags

Labplas produces TWIRL'EM bags with dry heat during film extrusion (above 220 °C / 428 °F), which its data sheet rates at a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻³. Labplas also lists them as DNase-free, RNase-free and non-pyrogenic. These bags are not irradiated and are not supplied with a sterility certificate. If your procedure requires certified sterile bags, choose TWIRL'EM Clean Room.

See the sample without opening the bag

The fully transparent film, with no printing, gives a clear view of the contents for visual checks, and leaves the whole surface free for your own labels.

Secure wire closure, no tools needed

Twirl the bag by the wire ends to wind the top closed, then fold the wires over to lock it. The sample is sealed waterproof and airtight for transport, without caps, clips or heat sealers. A tear-off perforated top keeps the opening clean until you sample.

Food-contact compliant film

The polyethylene-blend film meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation No 10/2011 for food contact, according to Labplas. That matters when bags hold food samples or product destined for testing.

Long shelf life

Labplas lists a 5-year shelf life when stored dry at room temperature, so cases of 1,000 can be kept on hand without waste.

Available Sizes

All Clear bags on this page use the standard closure (2 round wires). Choose the size in the selector. Need a printed writing area or a heavier closure? See TWIRL'EM Write-On. For controlled environments, see TWIRL'EM Clean Room.

Code Size (in) Size (mm) Thickness Case
EPL-3070 3.5 × 7 89 × 178 3 mil 1,000 (2 × 500)
EPL-4590 4.5 × 9 114 × 229 2.5 mil 1,000 (2 × 500)
EPL-4512 4.5 × 12 114 × 305 2.5 mil 1,000 (2 × 500)
EPL-5590 5.5 × 9 140 × 229 3 mil 1,000 (2 × 500)
EPL-5512 5.5 × 12 140 × 305 3 mil 1,000 (2 × 500)
EPL-7012 7 × 12 178 × 305 3 mil 1,000 (4 × 250)
EPL47012 7 × 12 (heavy gauge) 178 × 305 4 mil 1,000 (4 × 250)

Which Size Should I Choose?

  • 3.5 × 7 in (EPL-3070): small liquid samples and swabs
  • 4.5 × 9 or 4.5 × 12 in (EPL-4590, EPL-4512): water samples and small solid samples; the 12 in length gives more headspace for twirling
  • 5.5 × 9 or 5.5 × 12 in (EPL-5590, EPL-5512): common general-purpose sizes for food and environmental samples
  • 7 × 12 in (EPL-7012): larger food, soil and feed samples
  • 7 × 12 in, 4 mil (EPL47012): same size with thicker film for heavier, bulkier or sharp-edged samples

Common Applications

Application How These Bags Help
Food sampling Clean, food-contact compliant bags; for certified sterile microbiology sampling, use the Clean Room bags.
Water and wastewater sampling A waterproof, airtight closure for liquid samples in transport.
Soil and feed sampling Larger sizes and the 4 mil option handle bulkier material.
Molecular work Labplas lists the bags as DNase-free and RNase-free.

Selection & Handling Notes

  • Don't overfill. Leave enough room at the top to twirl and fold the closure. Labplas lists a usable volume below the total volume. For example, the 5.5 × 9 in bag holds 930 mL in total but has a usable volume of 550 mL.
  • Sharp or very heavy samples: use the 4 mil EPL47012, or the heavy sample closure on the Write-On page.
  • Temperature limits: Labplas doesn't publish freezing or heating limits on the data sheet we reviewed. Check with Cambridge before freezing, heating or autoclaving.
  • Single use: use each bag once. Don't reuse them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are TWIRL'EM Clear bags used for?

They're clean, transparent sampling bags for collecting, transporting and storing liquid, semi-solid and solid samples in food, environmental, agricultural and research labs.

How do you close a TWIRL'EM bag?

Hold the wire ends, twirl the bag to wind the top closed, then fold the wire ends over to lock it. This gives a waterproof, airtight seal.

What's the difference between EPL-7012 and EPL47012?

Both are 7 × 12 in. EPL-7012 is 3 mil film; EPL47012 is heavier 4 mil film for bulkier or sharp samples.

Is there a version with a writing area?

Yes. See TWIRL'EM Write-On, which also offers a heavy sample closure.

Are these bags certified sterile?

No. Labplas produces them with dry heat during film extrusion (SAL 10⁻³), but they are not irradiated and don't come with a sterility certificate. For certified sterile bags, choose TWIRL'EM Clean Room.

Are they suitable for food samples?

Yes. Labplas states the film meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation No 10/2011 for food contact.

Are they suitable for wastewater testing?

Yes. Labplas lists water and sewage among its applications, and the closure is waterproof and airtight for liquid samples.

How many bags are in a case?

Every code on this page comes in cases of 1,000.

Are TWIRL'EM bags available in Canada?

Yes. Labplas is a Canadian manufacturer, and Cambridge Environmental Products supplies TWIRL'EM bags across Canada with CAD pricing.
